When the Lover of the Zodiac Goes Quiet

In astrology, Venus is the planet of relationships, love, beauty, the arts, cooperation, and money, and changes sign every month or so. The Venusian energy is balanced, loving, peaceful, fair, just and admires beauty and artistry. Venus is also flirtatious, the men more so than the women generally speaking. Nevertheless, female Librans can flirt when they want to, as they embody the Goddess of Love vibe. Additionally, Venus has an affinity with the feminine yin energy, and when retrograde, emotional and financial issues, especially in relationships, can arise for some Librans. For others, it just means the changes are internalised, and you may need to find a different way of dealing with the retrograde energy.

Venus Retrograde Dates

Venus moves into retrograde at 10° Aries 50′ Rx on March 1 to April 12, 2025 and Venus stations direct at 24° Pisces 38′. There's an idea going around that Venus goes retrograde for 40 days and 40 nights. This is not strictly true as poetic as it might sound... it's approximately 40-45 days and nights. Venus turns retrograde every 18 months approximately, so not every year.

When any planet goes through a backward motion there is also a shadow period commencing a few weeks or months before and after the stated dates. In the case of Venus, it goes into pre-shadow January 28 and finishes post shadow May 16.

Venus went retrograde in Leo a mutable fire sign last time in September 2023 and this year it will move backward in cardinal fire Aries and mutable water Pisces. Consequently, signs most affected by this retrograde will be cardinal signs Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn and mutable signs Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Taurus will also be affected because it is ruled by Venus along with Libra who will feel this intensely as a cardinal air sign. However, no one gets off 'scot free' as all zodiac signs are affected to some extent.

This transit is all about becoming more mature in relationships and it's encouraging us to be more independent while still being in relationships built on equality, not dependency. The purpose of this time is to aid our emotional growth, which can have real passionate consequences. Sometimes growing pains come with that growth but do be mindful that growing pains are only for a time as you grow into your new skin.

You may also relocate, deal in real estate, start a new business, or change plans in an existing business. Existing relationships may deepen by having a baby, moving in together, or renewing vows after the Venus Retrograde story. You may also beautify your home or work area by redecorating or renovating. It may seem in the retrograde that you are going backwards in some way, but this is actually to clear the way so that you can move forwards!

Venus Retrograde and the Goddess Herself: What the Myths Can Teach Us About Love, Drama, and Owning It!

So, here’s the thing about Venus: she’s not just a planet swirling around in space making us feel all moody and reflective during retrograde. She’s got a rich history as a goddess - the ultimate symbol of love, beauty, and some occasional emotional chaos. If you’ve ever wondered why Venus retrograde feels like a time when love life, money, and emotions go completely haywire, well, the goddess herself gives us *all* the clues.

Inanna’s Underworld Drama - Retrograde Vibes

Let’s start with Inanna, the ancient Sumerian goddess who’s basically the original Venus. The myth revolves around Inanna visiting the underworld – as most of us do at some time during the dark night of the Soul. She goes down to claim her rightful place as queen of the underworld, not really knowing what will befall her.

Inanna's sister, Ereshkigal, is the queen of the underworld. Inanna's descent is viewed as a challenge to Ereshkigal's authority. It's an act of power, not a visit driven by sisterly affection. The sisters' relationship is based on rivalry and ultimately conflict, culminating in Inanna's near-death experience and subsequent transformation.

On Inanna's way down, she is stripped of all her fancy goddess gear – her crown, her jewels, even her robes. Naked and vulnerable, she gets stuck in the underworld. It's a bit like when we have been through hard times and gone deep within after being battered and bruised by life, with our confidence and self-esteem stripped away from us.

Sound familiar? This is such a Venus retrograde moment. Just like Inanna, we can sometimes feel “stripped bare” during retrograde. Relationships, love, and even our finances can face intense scrutiny, forcing us to get real about what matters. And just like Inanna’s story, it can be as painful as hell, but when we face those dark, murky emotions, we come out stronger. Spoiler alert: Inanna eventually makes it out of the underworld reborn and ready to take on life again.

What we can learn from Inanna

Retrograde times are about peeling back the glittery layers and digging deep. It’s messy, but by the end, we’re clear on what truly matters. Emotional baggage gets stripped away, leaving us with a brand new emotional skin.

Aphrodite’s Love Life - Passion, Drama, and a Big Dose of Reflection

Now let’s talk about Aphrodite, Venus’s Greek name. This goddess had intense feelings, and her love stories were usually as dramatic as a soap opera marathon. Take her love affair with Adonis, the mortal she absolutely adored. Tragically, Adonis gets fatally wounded (long story involving a wild boar), and Aphrodite’s grief is beyond this world. She cries so much she turns his blood into the anemone flower. Classic Aphrodite – even her heartbreak becomes something beautiful.

Here’s the retrograde lesson: Love isn’t always smooth sailing (well, duh). During Venus retrograde, unresolved relationship issues can come bubbling to the surface. Maybe it’s an ex-partner popping back into your life, perhaps life just feels harder with your current partner. It’s all about revisiting emotions and figuring out what’s worth holding onto and what needs to be let go. And yes, that can look a bit like sobbing into a tub of ice cream before deciding you’re better off.

Aphrodite Takeaway?

The Venus retrograde is your chance to turn heartbreak into an anemone – AKA something beautiful. Reflection clears the way for you to love more deeply and authentically.

Morning Star Arguments vs. Evening Star Love

Here’s a fun fact: Venus actually has a dual identity – she’s the Morning Star and the Evening Star because she is the brightest 'star like' object in the sky, especially around dawn and dusk. In the morning, she’s all fire and sparks, often associated with war and conflict, while in the evening, she’s the queen of love, harmony, and sensual vibes. People have been noticing this about Venus for literally thousands of years – ancient stargazers saw her as two sides of the same coin.

During retrograde? You’re in full-on Morning Star mode. Once Venus slips into retrograde, she’s all about tackling the tough stuff. Arguments spark over seemingly small things (toilet seat left up again? Cue fire!), old grudges come up, and anything unsaid is likely to explode out of your mouth – often at the worst moment possible. However, there's a silver lining so don’t panic. The retrograde is Venus channelling that Morning Star energy to shake things up so you can emerge stronger when peace-loving Evening Star kicks back in.

Retrograde as a Cosmic Makeover

Here’s the funny thing about Venus retrograde – it might feel like everything’s falling apart when really, it’s just clearing the path to something better. Whether it’s stripping back your emotional baggage (remember Inanna), navigating relationship drama (just like Aphrodite), or figuring out your values, one thing’s certain: Venus retrograde isn’t here for no reason. It’s pushing you to grow, reevaluate, and create something solid.

Even if you’re feeling all the feels (and, let’s be honest, probably yelling at your ex-partner in your head), there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Like Inanna emerging from the underworld, you’re going to walk out of Venus retrograde stronger, wiser, and ready to embody the best version of yourself.

More about Evening Star Love & Morning Star Arguments

It's quite intriguing that Libra and Taurus who are ruled by Venus, adore peace and harmony, and yet they can still find themselves in arguments. Peace-loving Librans and Taureans would rather have everything smooth sailing, but when something really clashes with their core beliefs or values, they won't shy away from standing their ground. Taurus, for all its chill vibes, can get pretty stubborn when pushed, especially about things they deeply care about. And Libra, the harmony-seeker, won't hesitate to voice out against injustice or when fairness goes out the window. It's as if Libra has this inner warrior that sparks up when their principles are on the line, even though they'd rather have everything serene.

The concept of Venus as the Morning Star and the Evening Star, each associated with different qualities, traces back to ancient civilizations observing the planet's movements. As the Morning Star rises before dawn, it is linked historically with conflicts, wars, and disputes, possibly due to its appearance in the sky during times of tension. Conversely, as the Evening Star appears after sunset, symbolising harmony, love, and sensuality because of its visibility during peaceful, romantic evenings. These associations go back to ancient Mesopotamian and Babylonian civilizations, around 3000 BCE, where celestial observations formed the basis of mythology and early astrology, influencing interpretations of planetary movements, including Venus's dual role as the Morning and Evening Star.

Do be aware that this retrograde in Aries also adds fire into the mix which could bring arguments. Then the retrograde phase moves into watery Pisces bringing even more emotions so it could be a bit of a wild ride if we're not careful.

The Rose of Venus and Venus Retrograde

The Rose of Venus is a visual representation of the synodic cycle of Venus, plotting its positions relative to Earth every eight years. The resulting pattern, often described as resembling a rose or a five-petaled flower, results due to a complex interplay between Earth's and Venus's orbital velocities and the changing observational perspective here on Earth. The retrograde periods manifest as loops or cusps within the "petals" of the Rose, representing the periods where Venus appears to move backward against the backdrop of the stars. In reality of course, no planet actually travels backwards, it only appears that way to us on Earth, as a type of optical illusion. However, the Rose of Venus pattern is quite beautiful and befits the planet of beauty and love!

The Rose of Venus, with its cyclical, harmonious pattern, mirrors Venus's influence on themes like love and beauty. It's a visual reminder of life's repeating cycles and the lessons we encounter again and again!

Old Lovers from the Past

Under Venus Retrograde, sometimes old lovers from the past can return if all the issues are not resolved. Before you go rushing into old love affairs, remember why that person is an Ex!  Go slow because sometimes, if you get back with an Ex during a retrograde, the relationship could dramatically change when this planet turns direct. People do sometimes change their minds when the Morning/Evening Star moves forward again. So do be conscious of underlying patterns if an Ex returns especially when this planet is retrograde.

Review Your Finances

During Venus Retrograde, it’s an excellent time to review your finances and business plans. There may not necessarily be any issues, but it’s good to check where you’re at financially anyway. It’s not a good time to invest your hard earned $$$ when Venus is retrograde, as investments could lose value when this planet turns direct again. The only possible exceptions to this may be beautiful objects of art or perhaps jewellery. The Morning and Evening Star does like attractive investments that last for a long time.

If you have a business, you may review your business structure and strategy.

So that's all about Venus Retrograde for 2025

Venus Retrograde gives us the opportunity of reviewing, reflecting, and reassessing our relationships, our finances, and business opportunities. We can then tweak our future direction to make real physical gains.

In 2025 Venus turns retrograde in the signs of Pisces and Aries, it could be much more of an emotional time, and we may also be quite impulsive at times. During Venus retrograde in Pisces, emotions intensify, urging introspection in relationships, while in Aries, expect impulsive decisions and re-evaluation of personal desires, igniting a need for independence and freedom in matters of the heart. Some could be quite overwhelmed by emotions, so being grounded and practical will assist. Valuable lessons may be learnt now. So that's all you need to know about Venus retrograde in 2025.

Many Blessings!
