As they approach the big 5-0, many people find themselves grappling with what’s commonly known as a midlife crisis. This period often brings a stark realization of life’s finite nature, sparking a whirlwind of panic about unfulfilled dreams and missed opportunities. For some, it's a bit of a shock and certainly for many women, it's a time of adjustment and transition.

During a midlife crisis, it’s not uncommon to feel a mix of emotions including anger, fear, depression, and hopelessness. The big picture can become blurry, overshadowed by an overwhelming sense of disappointment.

When Does a Midlife Crisis Happen?

A midlife crisis can usually happen around the 40-60 year age range. There's usually a lot going on in terms of significant changes, children leaving home, grandchildren and sometimes divorce. Sometimes a midlife crisis is precipitated when someone close to us, passes over to the other side.

What are my biggest accomplishments in life?

Make a list of everything you’ve done in life, whether it's graduating college, working a job you love, getting married, buying a house or having children. Reminding yourself of all the wonderful things you’ve accomplished will make you realise that you’ve lived a fulfilling, rewarding life. If you’re struggling to come up with a full list, ask your close friends and family for their input.

Are there any goals I haven’t achieved yet?

No matter how long your list of accomplishments is, you likely have a few goals that you haven’t met yet. Write those down too, and start thinking about how you could accomplish each one. It’s never too late to chase your dreams, and you shouldn’t sell yourself short just because you’ve reached a certain age.

Is there anything I can do to improve my health?

One of the main concerns people have during a midlife crisis is that they don’t have much time left. While death is an unavoidable part of life, you can make sure your remaining years are as happy and as healthy as can be. Schedule an appointment with your doctor or health practitioner to chat about staying healthy. Whether it’s quitting smoking or losing weight, a few changes could dramatically improve your physical and emotional wellbeing, and you could even buy yourself a few extra years. Improve your diet...a good diet, 7-8 hours of good quality sleep and plenty of movement every day are vital to minimise the chances of getting dementia.

It's a good idea to review your health every 2 years and make adjustments. Get a full blood test, including iron and ferritin levels. Ferritin is not normally tested, but you should ask for this test because it relates to stored iron. This is iron that's not floating around in the bloodstream. So if you're feeling tired, make sure you ask for this as well as a full thyroid panel.

What milestones am I looking forward to?

Are any of your children getting married in the next few years? Are you expecting grandchildren or planning for retirement? Don’t forget that life still holds lots of great things after the age of 50. Start thinking about the wonderful events that lie ahead of you. In addition, try to plan an extensive vacation to a destination you’ve always wanted to visit. Looking forward to a new adventure is incredibly exciting, and when you have the time and financial resources to travel, it can be even better.

Make a bucket list

Once you’ve asked yourself these questions, remember: you likely have at least 25 years of life left. 25 years is a long time, and it leaves you plenty of time to cross everything off your bucket list. So make one now! What do you really want to do and it's never been quite the right time?

Dealing with a midlife crisis can be stressful and it is important not to get bogged down with negative thoughts. In general, start focusing on all the things you’ve accomplished in life and all the good memories you still have to make. Doing so should help pull you out of your funk and rejuvenate your outlook on life! You still have a long road left!
