Start Your New Year Off Right

A new year provides endless opportunities to refresh your body, your mind and your life. You can ditch bad habits and start living the life you’ve always dreamed of.

But how? Creating a new you goes far beyond simply making New Year’s resolutions. It entails having a clear vision of where you want to be, taking conscious, proactive steps to get there and evaluating yourself on a regular basis. Unfortunately, many people fall into the trap of making a list of resolutions each year but then allow those lists to collect dust throughout the year. The result? Another year without any significant changes made to their lifestyle.

If you want 2015 to be your year – of change, growth or success – there are several steps you should take to seize the day and break free from your old ways.

  • Write down your goals. What is it that you want to accomplish this year? Whether it’s repair a relationship with an old friend, improve your health or travel somewhere new, you need to identify your goals and put them somewhere you won’t forget. Make a clear, concise list and hang it somewhere you see often to make sure it’s top of mind every day.
  • Make a plan. Making the most of a new year requires more than just listing out your goals. You must devise a plan for how you’re going to accomplish those goals and assign timelines for reaching them. If you’d like to take a trip to another country, figure out what you’ll need to do to get there (save money, make time in your schedule, take off work, etc) and pinpoint when you’d like to accomplish each item by.
  • Share your goals with friends. To hold yourself accountable, tell your loved ones what you’d like to accomplish this year. Enlist the help of a family member to check in on your progress, or find a friend who has a similar goal and embark on the journey together. Having a loved one on your side not only makes your challenge more fun, but it will help to have support on your side. Get going! You can make the most detailed plan of how you’ll accomplish your goals and share it with the whole world; but if you don’t do your part to make your dreams come true, this year will pass without much success. Get moving on your goals early, and 2015 will be a great year for you.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by an entire year of goals, challenges and timelines, remember to take it day by day. Wake up every morning with a clear, optimistic mindset. Create a routine that works for you, like stretching as you get out of bed or sitting down with a cup of coffee to write your daily to-do list. Treating each day as its own and doing your best to make the most of it will help you succeed in the long term.
